Know your floor

What rigid core vinyl plank is, layer by layer.

A wood look floor built in layers around a stiff core. It clicks together, floats over the subfloor and shrugs off the spills a kitchen throws at it.

  1. 01

    CrystaLux protection layer

The clear top coat that takes the scratches and scuffs. MSI makes it from 6 to 30 mil and calls 20 mil and up commercial grade.

    On this floor: 20 mil

  2. 02

    Printed wood design

A wood grain print under the clear layer. On some lines the texture is pressed to follow the print, which MSI calls embossed in register.

  3. 03

    Rigid core

The stiff, waterproof center. It keeps each plank flat and lets the planks click together.

This floor, in all: 5 mm

  4. 04

    Attached pad

Bonded under every plank. If your installer wants more, MSI allows only its own underlayment, one layer.

On this floor: 1 mm IXPE

The difference

Spills wipe up and the planks stay flat.

MSI rates its rigid core floors 100% waterproof: the planks resist swelling from household spills and routine cleaning, and MSI's flyer says they take topical water for up to 16 hours without damage.

Andover Bayhill Blonde, in a room

From a cabinet company: set your cabinets first.

MSI's warranty does not cover cabinets, islands or built ins installed on top of a floating floor, because the floor has to move with the seasons. Set the cabinets on the subfloor, then lay the floor up to them and leave MSI's expansion gap at the cabinet base, covered by trim.

Pros and cons

Where it shines, and what to know first.

Why people choose it

  • Waterproof by MSI's rating, so the kitchen and the mudroom can share one floor.
  • Clicks together and floats over the subfloor, with no acclimation in normal conditions.
  • The pad comes attached to every plank.
  • Wear layers from 6 to 30 mil in our store, so you pick how tough the top coat is.
  • Most lines carry a lifetime limited residential warranty from MSI (see this floor's specs).

What to know first

  • It is vinyl. A deep gouge means replacing the plank, since there is nothing to sand or refinish.
  • Waterproof covers spills. MSI's warranty does not cover leaks, flooding or water under the floor.
  • It floats, so cabinets and islands cannot sit on top (see the note above).
  • Strong direct sun can fade it over time. MSI recommends blinds or drapes in sunny rooms.
  • The subfloor has to be flat to 1/8 inch over 6 feet, which can mean leveling first.

Room by room

  • Good fitBathroomsMSI's warranty excludes wet areas and standing water, so keep it out of showers.
  • Good fitBasementsMSI rates Cyrus and other lines for every grade level. Test the slab first.

Install and care

Install and care

Four steps, straight from MSI’s guide.

The rules MSI sets for rigid core vinyl plank in its installation guide. Following them keeps the warranty intact, so hand this list to whoever lays your floor.

  1. 01

    Check the subfloor

Flat to 1/8 inch over 6 feet. On concrete, test the moisture with in place RH probes; new slabs cure at least 60 days, and over 90% RH needs a moisture barrier or MSI underlayment.

  2. 02

    Skip the wait

No acclimation in normal conditions. If the boxes sat below 40°F or above 95°F, or in humidity under 35% or over 70%, lay the unopened boxes flat in the room for 12 hours.

  3. 03

Click it together and float it

Leave a 1/4 inch gap at every wall and fixed object. Put a transition at doorways and in any run longer than 40 feet.

  4. 04

    Live in it

Keep the house between 65 and 85°F for the life of the floor. Over radiant heat, only hydronic systems, 85°F at most.

Caring for it

  • Sweep, dust mop or vacuum on the hard floor setting.
  • Wipe spills dry right away. For cleaning, put a mild pH neutral floor cleaner on the cloth, never on the floor.
  • No steam mops, wet mops, wax, polish, bleach, ammonia, oil soaps or beater bars. MSI lists all of them as warranty violations.
  • Felt pads under furniture, soft polyurethane wheels on chairs, and lift heavy things instead of sliding them.
  • Blinds or drapes on windows with strong sun, to limit fading.
  • Mats at outside doors catch grit. Skip rubber backed mats, which MSI also lists as a violation.

Questions

Rigid core vinyl plank, answered.

Is it really waterproof?

MSI calls it 100% waterproof and backs it with a waterproof warranty: the planks resist surface swelling from household spills and routine cleaning, and MSI's flyer says they take topical water for up to 16 hours. It is not a moisture barrier. Water that runs over the edges can still reach a wood subfloor, and MSI does not cover flooding, leaks or standing water.

Can my kitchen cabinets sit on it?

No. MSI's warranty excludes cabinets, islands and built ins installed on top of a floating floor. Set the cabinets first and lay the floor up to them.

Do I need an underlayment?

The pad is attached to every plank. If your installer adds more, MSI requires its own approved underlayment, one layer only. Never lay it over carpet.

Can it go in a basement?

Yes. MSI rates lines like Cyrus and Trecento for every grade level. Test the slab with RH probes first; above 90% RH you need a moisture barrier or MSI underlayment.

How do I clean it?

Sweep or vacuum, and wipe spills dry. For deeper cleaning, a mild pH neutral cleaner on a cloth. Never a steam mop.

What does the wear layer number mean?

Mil is a thousandth of an inch of clear protection on top. A bigger number takes more traffic before it wears. MSI calls 20 mil and up commercial grade.
