Know your floor

What glue down vinyl plank is, layer by layer.

A thin, flexible vinyl plank glued to the subfloor. It sits low, stays put, and suits rooms where every fraction of an inch of height matters.

  1. 01

    CrystaLux protection layer

The clear top coat against scratches, stains and dents. 6 to 22 mil across our glue down lines.

    On this floor: 12 mil

  2. 02

    Printed wood design

Wood looks from weathered to refined, printed under the clear layer.

  3. 03

    Flexible vinyl base

Thin and bendable, 2 to 2.5 mm in all. It bonds to the subfloor with MSI adhesive, so there is no pad and no click joint.

This floor, in all: 2 mm

The difference

The thinnest floor in our store, and it stays where you put it.

At 2 to 2.5 mm it rarely needs door trimming or tall transitions, and glued down it has no float to it. MSI approves these lines for every grade level, in homes and businesses.

Glenridge Jatoba, in a room

From a cabinet company: glue down is the exception.

MSI's warranty allows cabinets and islands on top of a floor that is fully adhered, when the installation method permits it. Ask your installer before you set cabinets on it.

Pros and cons

Where it shines, and what to know first.

Why people choose it

  • The thinnest floor we sell, so it fits under doors and beside other floors with little or no height change.
  • Glued down, so it does not shift or flex as you walk.
  • Approved by MSI for every grade level, residential and commercial.
  • The lowest prices per square foot in our flooring store.
  • A damaged plank can be warmed with a heat gun and lifted out, per MSI's instructions.

What to know first

  • Needs adhesive and more install time than a click floor.
  • The subfloor must be smooth and flat (3/16 inch over 10 feet), because a thin plank shows what is under it.
  • Most lines need 48 hours at 65 to 85°F before, during and after the install. Acclima is the exception.
  • No attached pad, so it feels firmer than our rigid core floors.

Install and care

Install and care

Four steps, straight from MSI’s guide.

The rules MSI sets for glue down vinyl plank in its installation guide. Following them keeps the warranty intact, so hand this list to whoever lays your floor.

  1. 01

    Prepare a smooth, flat subfloor

Flat within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Wood subfloors need 1 inch of APA rated plywood or more with no bounce.

  2. 02

    Condition the room

Hold the subfloor, the planks and the adhesive at 65 to 85°F for 48 hours before, during and after. Acclima needs no acclimation between 30 and 120°F.

  3. 03

Spread an MSI adhesive and lay it

MSI calls for its own adhesives (MS001, MS007 or MS009); follow the label for trowel and working time. Over 90% RH on concrete, MS007 or MS009 or a moisture barrier. Roll the floor with a 100 pound roller.

  4. 04

Keep the weight off at first

No heavy traffic, rolling loads or furniture for 72 hours. Over radiant heat, 85°F at most.

Caring for it

  • Sweep, dust mop or vacuum on the hard floor setting.
  • Wipe spills dry right away. For cleaning, put a mild pH neutral floor cleaner on the cloth, never on the floor.
  • No steam mops, wet mops, wax, polish, bleach, ammonia, oil soaps or beater bars. MSI lists all of them as warranty violations.
  • Felt pads under furniture, soft polyurethane wheels on chairs, and lift heavy things instead of sliding them.
  • Blinds or drapes on windows with strong sun, to limit fading.
  • Mats at outside doors catch grit. Skip rubber backed mats, which MSI also lists as a violation.

Questions

Glue down vinyl plank, answered.

Is glue down vinyl waterproof?

MSI sells Nove Plus and Nove Reserve as waterproof and Acclima as water resistant; check this floor's description. Either way MSI's warranty covers household spills, not leaks or standing water.

Can cabinets go on top of it?

MSI's warranty allows fixed cabinets on a fully adhered floor when the installation method permits it. Confirm with your installer first.

Can I install it myself?

It takes adhesive, the right trowel and a very flat subfloor, so many homeowners hire it out. Our click floors are the easier DIY choice.

Does it need acclimation?

Most lines need 48 hours at 65 to 85°F. Acclima is made to skip it between 30 and 120°F.
