Know your floor

What engineered hardwood is, layer by layer.

A real hardwood floor, European white oak on most of our lines, built over a cross layered core so it stays stable as the seasons change.

  1. 01

    Factory finish

MSI's CrystaLux finish, applied at the factory, so the floor is done the day it goes down.

  2. 02

    Real hardwood top

Genuine hardwood with its own knots and grain. No two planks match, which is the point.

On this floor: 4 mm sawn oak

  3. 03

    Multi ply core

Layers of wood laid in opposite directions, which MSI uses for added stability.

This floor, in all: 15 mm

The difference

The only floor here with wood all the way down.

Under the finish, every layer is wood. You get the grain, the warmth and the long wide planks of real oak, up to 9.5 x 86 inches on McCarran, with a limited lifetime structural warranty from MSI.

McCarran Whitlock, in a room

From a cabinet company: it depends how it goes down.

MSI's warranty allows cabinets on a floor that is fully adhered, when the method permits it. Glued or stapled can work; floated, set the cabinets first and leave an expansion gap equal to the floor's thickness.

Pros and cons

Where it shines, and what to know first.

Why people choose it

  • Real hardwood, with natural knots, grain and variation.
  • Long, wide planks, up to 9.5 x 86 inches.
  • Most lines go down four ways: glued, wet laid, stapled or floated.
  • A limited lifetime structural warranty from MSI, plus a 30 year or lifetime residential finish warranty by line.
  • Works over hydronic or embedded electric radiant heat, 80°F at the surface.

What to know first

  • It is not waterproof. Spills have to be wiped up right away.
  • Needs 72 hours to acclimate, with the HVAC running 5 days before delivery.
  • Keep 35 to 55% humidity and 65 to 75°F for life; a humidifier in winter helps.
  • It dents and scratches like any wood floor.

Install and care

Install and care

Four steps, straight from MSI’s guide.

The rules MSI sets for engineered hardwood in its installation guide. Following them keeps the warranty intact, so hand this list to whoever lays your floor.

  1. 01

    Get the house ready

HVAC running at least 5 days before the wood arrives, 65 to 75°F and 35 to 55% humidity.

  2. 02

    Acclimate 72 hours

Stack the cartons with 4 inches of air under them, plastic off and ends open.

  3. 03

    Check moisture

Concrete under 75% RH. Wood subfloor and flooring under 12% moisture, within 4% of each other.

  4. 04

    Glue, staple or float

Leave an expansion gap equal to the plank thickness. Floating rooms past 26 x 33 feet need a T molding break.

Caring for it

  • Sweep, dust mop or vacuum on the hard floor setting.
  • Wipe spills dry right away. For cleaning, put a mild pH neutral floor cleaner on the cloth, never on the floor.
  • No steam mops, wet mops, wax, polish, bleach, ammonia, oil soaps or beater bars. MSI lists all of them as warranty violations.
  • Felt pads under furniture, soft polyurethane wheels on chairs, and lift heavy things instead of sliding them.
  • Blinds or drapes on windows with strong sun, to limit fading.
  • Mats at outside doors catch grit. Skip rubber backed mats, which MSI also lists as a violation.
  • Run a humidifier in the heating season and a dehumidifier or AC in summer to stay at 35 to 55%.
  • No area rugs over a radiant heated wood floor.

Questions

Engineered hardwood, answered.

What is the difference between engineered and solid hardwood?

Engineered hardwood is a real hardwood top bonded to a multi ply wood core. MSI builds the core in cross layers for added stability, and allows it over dry concrete and over radiant heat.

Can it go in a kitchen?

Yes, with care. It is real wood, so wipe spills right away and keep the humidity between 35 and 55%.

Can it go in a basement?

Only a dry one: the slab has to test under 75% RH, and crawl spaces need a 6 mil black poly cover over all the earth.

Do I really need to acclimate it?

Yes. MSI requires at least 72 hours in the room, with the HVAC already running.

Can my cabinets sit on it?

When it is fully glued or stapled and the method allows it, MSI's warranty permits it. When it floats, set the cabinets first.
