The difference

The laminate look, without laminate's fear of water.

MSI builds these planks with its DryLuxe technology for 100% waterproof protection, and says Shorecliffs has the best scratch resistance in the resilient category. Shorecliffs also runs 87 inch planks.

Shorecliffs Houston Trail, in a room

From a cabinet company: set your cabinets first.

MSI's warranty does not cover cabinets, islands or built ins installed on top of a floating floor, because the floor has to move with the seasons. Set the cabinets on the subfloor, then lay the floor up to them and leave MSI's expansion gap at the cabinet base, covered by trim.

Pros and cons

Where it shines, and what to know first.

Why people choose it

  • A laminate style AC4 or AC5 surface. MSI says Shorecliffs has the best scratch resistance in the resilient category.
  • Waterproof by MSI's DryLuxe rating.
  • Thick planks, 10 to 12 mm, with a 2 mm pad attached.
  • Long planks: Shorecliffs runs 9 x 87 inches.
  • Clicks together and floats; no acclimation in normal conditions.

What to know first

  • Tighter climate rules: 65 to 78°F and 35 to 70% humidity for the life of the floor.
  • Below grade, MSI does not allow it where there is a sump pump or floor drains.
  • Needs a 3/8 inch expansion gap and a T molding past 50 feet and at doorways under 4 feet.
  • At 10 to 12 mm, plan for door undercuts and the height change to other floors.

Install and care

Install and care

Four steps, straight from MSI’s guide.

The rules MSI sets for hybrid rigid core in its installation guide. Following them keeps the warranty intact, so hand this list to whoever lays your floor.

  1. 01

    Check the subfloor

Flat to 3/16 inch over 10 feet. On concrete, over 80% RH needs a barrier or MSI underlayment.

  2. 02

    Skip the wait

No acclimation in normal conditions. If the boxes sat below 40°F or above 95°F, lay them flat in the room for 12 hours.

  3. 03

    Click and float it

Leave 3/8 inch at walls and fixed objects. T moldings past 50 feet and in doorways under 4 feet wide.

  4. 04

    Hold the climate

Keep 65 to 78°F and 35 to 70% humidity. Over embedded radiant heat, turn it off 24 hours before and after the install, then 85°F at most.

Caring for it

  • Sweep, dust mop or vacuum on the hard floor setting.
  • Wipe spills dry right away. For cleaning, put a mild pH neutral floor cleaner on the cloth, never on the floor.
  • No steam mops, wet mops, wax, polish, bleach, ammonia, oil soaps or beater bars. MSI lists all of them as warranty violations.
  • Felt pads under furniture, soft polyurethane wheels on chairs, and lift heavy things instead of sliding them.
  • Blinds or drapes on windows with strong sun, to limit fading.
  • Mats at outside doors catch grit. Skip rubber backed mats, which MSI also lists as a violation.
