The difference

A stone floor with no grout lines to keep clean.

The tiles click edge to edge, so there is no grout to seal, stain or scrub. MSI rates them 100% waterproof for household spills and suitable for every grade level.

From a cabinet company: set your cabinets first.

MSI's warranty does not cover cabinets, islands or built ins installed on top of a floating floor, because the floor has to move with the seasons. Set the cabinets on the subfloor, then lay the floor up to them and leave MSI's expansion gap at the cabinet base, covered by trim.

Pros and cons

Where it shines, and what to know first.

Why people choose it

  • Stone and marble looks with no grout to seal or scrub.
  • Clicks together and floats, with no thinset or grout to set.
  • Waterproof by MSI's rating, for kitchens, baths and entries.
  • The pad comes attached, which makes it softer underfoot than tile set on a slab.
  • Large formats: 12 x 24 and 18 x 36 inch tiles, and Quadre's 18 inch checkerboard.

What to know first

  • It is vinyl, so it does not have the weight or the cool feel of real stone.
  • A chipped tile is replaced, never patched or refinished.
  • It floats, so cabinets and islands cannot sit on top.
  • Needs a flat subfloor: 1/8 inch over 6 feet.

Install and care

Install and care

Four steps, straight from MSI’s guide.

The rules MSI sets for rigid core vinyl tile in its installation guide. Following them keeps the warranty intact, so hand this list to whoever lays your floor.

  1. 01

    Check the subfloor

Flat to 1/8 inch over 6 feet. On concrete, test the moisture with in place RH probes; new slabs cure at least 60 days, and over 90% RH needs a moisture barrier or MSI underlayment.

  2. 02

    Skip the wait

No acclimation in normal conditions. If the boxes sat below 40°F or above 95°F, or in humidity under 35% or over 70%, lay the unopened boxes flat in the room for 12 hours.

  3. 03

Click it together and float it

Leave a 1/4 inch gap at every wall and fixed object. Put a transition at doorways and in any run longer than 40 feet.

  4. 04

    Live in it

Keep the house between 65 and 85°F for the life of the floor. Over radiant heat, only hydronic systems, 85°F at most.

Caring for it

  • Sweep, dust mop or vacuum on the hard floor setting.
  • Wipe spills dry right away. For cleaning, put a mild pH neutral floor cleaner on the cloth, never on the floor.
  • No steam mops, wet mops, wax, polish, bleach, ammonia, oil soaps or beater bars. MSI lists all of them as warranty violations.
  • Felt pads under furniture, soft polyurethane wheels on chairs, and lift heavy things instead of sliding them.
  • Blinds or drapes on windows with strong sun, to limit fading.
  • Mats at outside doors catch grit. Skip rubber backed mats, which MSI also lists as a violation.
